A piece of history
The Zeeland button, popularly known as the Zeeuws knopje or Zeeuws knopje, has a long history dating back to the time of Michiel De Ruyter (1607-1676).

The history of the Zeeland Knot

The Zeeland Button, also known colloquially as the Zeeuwse Knopje (Zeeuws Button), Zeeuws Knopje (Zeeuws Button), or Zeeuws Knoopje (Zeeuws Button), has a long history dating back to the time of Michiel De Ruyter (1607-1676). Men wore the buttons on their shirts, waistcoats, and collars as “throat buttons.” Later, women also wore them as jewelry, for example, as hat pins or brooches. The buttons were made of silver or gold. The Zeeland Button was a status symbol at the time: the larger the button, the wealthier and more important the wearer. Each region in Zeeland added its own decorations to the button. It is said that the shape of the button is based on a flower of the same name: the Zeeuwse knopje (Zeeuwse button). In Latin, it is also known as Astrantia.
